How the project started

Home mechanics often true a wheel by chasing the high spot with successive nipple turns until the rim looks better — and the tension is a mess. The next ride brings the hop back. The frustration is not a lack of care; it is the absence of a clear observation-and-correction order that treats tension as part of the true.

Lipbab grew from that pattern. Contributors who had taught basic workshop skills and maintained wheels for years kept seeing the same sequence of over-correction. The response was to isolate reading deviation, mapping tension, and correcting one hop at a time into practice units that can be worked on paper and then on a stand.

Important: Lipbab and Zeus Beton B.V. provide educational practice materials only. They do not take in wheels for commercial repair or issue professional mechanic credentials.

Principles

  • Observe before adjust — name the hop before turning a nipple
  • Tension is part of true — uneven tension undoes rim position
  • Small increments — quarter turns and re-checks over large swings
  • Honest rim limits — not every hop can be tensioned away
  • Educational scope only — practice, not paid repair

The team

Materials are developed by a small group with experience in bicycle workshop practice and adult technical teaching.

Unit design

Rob shapes the overall sequence of bench units. He has run small workshop sessions in Overijssel and insists every correction exercise starts with a written observation sheet.

Tension mapping

Marloes develops the tension and stress-relief materials. She focuses on relative feel and simple meter use so learners leave a wheel more even than they found it.

Deviation reading

Bert works on the observation and marking exercises. His background is long-term bike maintenance; the emphasis is on clear description before any tool is used.

Correction scenarios

Lotte designs the side-hop and radial-hop practice sequences. She builds scenarios where the next correct turn is not the most obvious one.
